Event overview
Dr Devin Blair Terhune (Goldsmiths Department of Psychology) shows how hypnosis can be used to study different facets of cognition & psychopathology.
ABSTRACT:
Hypnosis represents a valuable method for the top-down regulation of conscious states and it is becoming increasingly used in cognitive neuroscience. Here I will aim to provide a broad overview of the phenomenon of hypnosis from the purview of cognitive neuroscience. After dispelling a number of widespread myths and misconceptions about hypnosis, I will introduce its core features and describe how it is used in experimental contexts. I will then highlight behavioural and neuroimaging work that has begun to clarify the mechanisms of hypnosis and outline current thinking in the field regarding how the brain is able to produce the top-down regulation observed in hypnosis. Finally, I will provide a number of examples of how hypnosis can be used in an instrumental manner in order to study different facets of cognition and psychopathology. Research in this nascent domain can provide unique but complementary evidence regarding the mechanisms underlying different facets of cognition and consciousness including top-down regulation, agency, and awareness.
BIOGRAPHY:
