The University of London's vital statistics are impressive to say the least: a total student population of 115,000 students plus another 41,000 studying through the External System; 19 colleges and 9 institutes; over 2,000 programmes of study. Not forgetting the excellent academic and social facilities, including the University of London [ULU].
The University began life in the 1820s and 1830s, with the creation of University College and King's College. It received its Royal Charter in 1836, at a time when the only other English universities - Oxford and Cambridge - were closed to many. Today, the University maintains its founders' principles by pursuing excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and offering an unrivalled range of education and training opportunities. The University has played a significant part in the development of modern Higher Education - awarding degrees without religious tests; promoting teaching and research in laboratory science, engineering and modern languages; admitting women to degrees; and appointing women professors.
Goldsmiths plays a specialist role within the University, concentrating on the study of creative, cognitive, cultural and social subjects, and leads the development of several degrees offered worldwide through the External System.
Goldsmiths undergraduates can use a wide range of University facilities and opportunities, including the University of London Library and the University of London Union (ULU). The University's Student Service Units offer an insight into the Army, Royal Navy and RAF.
