Since being introduced in 1978, China's one-child policy has provoked international debate and created one-billion single child families. Now as the first generation born under the policy reach child-bearing age, China is gearing up to review its future. In her exhibition, "The Giver and the Taker", Aowen analyses the policy from the perspective of the first generation of women to be born as single children and how it has shaped their individuality, personalities, experience and expectations.
Aowen came to the UK originally to study law but decided to follow her passion for art instead. During her time at Goldsmiths she became the first foreign art teacher at Holloway prison and was also selected by the UK China Cultural Commission to produce an art work for the Queen on the occasion of her eightieth birthday.
