RAI Fellowship in Urgent Anthropology
Fellowship:Call for applications
The Fellowship, supported by the Anthropologists’ Fund for Urgent Anthropological Research (Founding Sponsor Dr George N. Appell) is designed to facilitate ethnographic research on currently threatened indigenous peoples, cultures and languages. Such research should, as a primary aim, contribute to anthropological knowledge through detailed ethnography, and also if possible help such peoples in their particular circumstances.
Goldsmiths (University of London) will host the programme for three years from 2011, during which two Fellowships will be awarded. Applications are now invited for the first of these (the fifteenth since the programme’s foundation) which will be for £36,000, inclusive of all costs except overheads to be borne by the Fund and host contribution. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the award in January 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter.
How to apply
The Fellowships are open to all, irrespective of citizenship, residence or current institutional affiliation. Applicants must either already have a doctoral qualification or equivalent in anthropology, or be nearing completion of doctoral research. Applicants are invited to submit budgeted projects costed at up to £36,000, to last approximately 18 months including field research and writing-up. All costs, including subsistence, transport, equipment, medical and other insurance, visa and permission fees if applicable, must be included in the budget. Please send your letter of application with a cv, project description and budget (nine copies of each) and three letters of reference (your referee should place their letter in an envelope and sign across the seal before giving it to you), by post, to

Selection of the successful candidate will be made by a Committee of the RAI, on which the host institution is represented. The Fellow will be expected to contribute actively to the research activities of the host Department and to reside within reasonable distance of Goldsmiths when writing up. He/she will be expected to submit reports at scheduled intervals, and to publish the results of the research, depositing copies of publications with the Fund, the Department and the Anthropology Library at the British Museum. Acknowledgment of the Fund and the RAI is required in all publications resulting from the research.
A seminar bringing together past holders of the Fellowships, and seeking to explore future directions of research in Urgent Anthropology, will take place at the University of Kent in September 2010. Participation is by invitation. For details follow this link.
