Artist, Laura Cuch has been a Visiting Research Fellow in the Anthropology Department since September 2010, and has been collaborating with Dr. Christopher Wright to produce a new project - Trans – that focuses on the recipients of organ transplants. The often literally life-changing experience of having an organ transplant has an impact on senses of identity, and Trans considers these new identities and how they are woven into personal narratives by the recipients.

Trans is the third part of a trilogy that Laura has been working on for several years, and follows two previous photographic projects; Sleepless (about people who sleep very little); and No Ma (about women who know for various reasons that they will never be mothers). In all three projects, portraits are accompanied by a textual account of the individual’s experience, and the details of each image – locations, important objects or clothing - are arrived at collaboratively between Laura and the person involved through a dialogue that is an essential part of the work.

The series of photographs and accompanying texts that form Trans will be exhibited at Goldsmiths from 19th October to 19th November 2011 (New Academic Building, Lower Ground), and the exhibition will be part of Photomonth, East London Photography Festival.

A more detailed description of Trans and other projects is available on Laura Cuch website -
