My work as an artist is within the field of video and sound installation. My starting points are fragments of cultural material taken as objets trouvés, which I reprocess, often mechanistically, to generate new material. By these means, I seek the representation of personhood in cultural terms. Music (as distinct from sound) is at the core of the work. I am interested in the difficulty of using popular music as a material for art; not only is it potentially more powerful than the art made from it, but its power is highly subjective. This material situation informs the conceptual basis of my work; taking the cultural construction of subjectivity as a given, I am interested in what might remain beyond this understanding.

I also work as a priest in the Church of England.  I am interested in the relation of contemporary art and religion, but do not currently recognise any shared language with which to discuss this - at least, not at the level that either discipline requires.  I could be wrong, of course; in any case, my research as an artist is increasingly driven by this question.
