'Colour: The Big Draw' at Goldsmiths hailed a huge success
As part the national Big Draw event, we invited families to take part in 'Colour' - The Big Draw at Goldsmiths, University of London, the 2009 event exploring colour. More than 700 visitors flooded to the event held in the Great Hall on Saturday, 24 October.
Families from across London and from even further afield took part in a range of activities centred on the three primary colours, designed and supervised by postgraduate trainee teachers from Goldsmiths.
The students were split into three groups - each designated one of the primary colours. The Blue Group focused their theme on Birds, putting on activities such as puppet-making, creating bird mobiles and masks, and collating a giant collage of their children’s creations.
The Red Group invited children to take part in their Fairground theme, manipulating their photographs on laptops in a 21st Century take on the Hall of Mirrors, making flamboyant masks and creating hot air balloon lanterns.
Finally, the Yellow Group encouraged families to help build a 3D ‘Yellow City’ from boxes and to decorate their creations which ranged from a scale model of Wembley stadium to Tower Bridge.
With more visitors than last year’s Big Draw, organisers have hailed the event as a huge success; something reiterated by comments left on the day.
“One word: WOW! I can’t wait for next year,” said Poppy, aged 10.
“What a brilliant day out. We loved everything especially building the houses,” said six-year-old twins Polly and Lucy.
“I enjoyed it very much, I had great fun. My favourite part was using the computers. The student helpers were brilliant, thank you.” said Matilda, aged eight.
This year Goldsmiths' Big Draw was partly sponsored by Aspire Aimhigher, the South East London partnership working to give young people in the area more opportunities to access further and higher education. The event was also supported by the Centre for Arts and Learning, a research centre at Goldsmiths dedicated to the practical and theoretical exploration of learning practices across the arts within diverse social and cultural contexts.
The Big Draw at Goldsmiths is also part of Inside Out - a major new festival curated by LCACE (the London Centre for Arts and Cultural Exchange) to showcase the fascinating contribution of nine London Universities to the capital’s cultural life. The Inside Out Festival takes place across London from 19 – 25 October 2009. For more information or to book events, visit the LCACE website.
