This course has been developed to foster creativity and entrepreneurialism in media professionals. Learn how to use creative talent to maximise the impact of your work - from an idea through to production, distribution and negotiation.

Map routes to market your work, learn about business modelling systems and new technology. After this course you will be able to clearly define:

  •     What you are offering
  •     How people paying for it will benefit from it
  •     Whether it is possible to create a sustainable social enterprise

But that’s not all. With this course you have the option of gaining Master’s level (M) credits, which you can use to build your own tailored postgraduate qualification. It is part of a new range of Skillset short courses, providing continuing professional development and postgraduate credits towards an award. The courses can be taken individually or in combination with a tailored selection of other courses across the Skillset Media Academy Network to achieve a recognised qualification, ranging from a Postgraduate Certificate to a Master's degree.

Key content

This course will introduce you to a range of business modelling tools, and provide insight in to the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and enterprises. It will draw on your own experiences in the working environment and you will be able to direct a portion of your study to key issues relevant to your practice, in negotiation with the tutor and others. By exploring a range of business models, you will develop the skills required to build a financially sustainable organisation. A range of techniques will be introduced, including:

  • Relationship Modelling – gain an understanding of the range of business models in the creative industries
  • Evidence Modelling – learn how to review the likely impact of an idea
  • Blueprint Modelling – learn how to create an operating plan articulating all of the activities and responsibilities required
  • Consequence Modelling – an introduction to financial modelling techniques

Course delivery

This course will be taught as a series of face-to-face sessions, designed to stimulate thinking on how to develop an idea in to a structured project and business plan. You will explore a specific area of interest with a range of like-minded media professionals and input from academics and industry guest lecturers. You will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge further with supported online study during which you will take part in a variety of online exercises, forums and projects. These activities can easily fit around your current professional work.

You will have the option of undertaking an academic assignment and on its successful completion will gain 30 Master’s level credits. If you go on to participate in and pass more of our courses you can accrue credits towards a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a Master’s.

Course tutor

This course is based on knowledge developed through NESTA’s Creative Pioneer and Creative Economy Programmes. Course tutors include experts from NESTA’s Policy and Research Team and the Creative Economy unit BritDoc and Channel 4.

When, where and how much?

This course will start with two full days on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 September, followed by a Wednesday evening session on 19 September, a full day on Saturday 6 October and a final session on Wednesday 17 October.   In addition there will be time set aside for tutorials in September and October.  The course combines face-to-face and webinar delivery, with additional supported online study. You will have access to a Virtual Learning Environment and social networking software enabling team working, peer support and mentoring from industry professionals. The course costs £900, with an Early Bird reduced price of £800 if you book by 10 August 2012.

Who should take this course?

This course is for media professionals, particularly those who wish to acquire techniques that enable them to decide what their 'core' business is, how to understand market segmentation and focus their offer to the appropriate market sector. It is particularly appropriate for professionals who wish to seek out new opportunities for their work and determine its commercial value.

Entry requirements

This course is open to media professionals with an undergraduate degree and the required work experience in a relevant industry (normally a minimum of two years); and to non-graduates with significant and relevant work experience (normally 5 years) who can demonstrate an ability to both complete and benefit from the course.
