Event overview
Discover the forgotten history of Deptford Town Hall as part of the capital's largest annual festival of architecture and design.
"As the Battle of the Somme rages in northern France, a young man anxiously waits to be called into a secret hearing in Deptford Town Hall’s Council Chamber. He stares fixedly at the marble floor, hands absentmindedly gripping a tattered bible, lips silently repeating the Lord’s Prayer."
Step back into 1916 and discover the secret history of one of South East London’s most striking buildings. During WWI, Deptford Town Hall hosted a series of secret hearings of ‘conscientious objectors’, men who resisted begin drafted into the armed forces.
Research by Goldsmiths historians is revealing striking new details that paint a vivid picture of local life during one of the most turbulent periods in world history. Join us for guided tours and an original theatrical re-enactment of a conscientious objector trial in the Town Hall’s newly refurbished Council Chamber.
Times of guided tours and performances: 12pm, 2pm & 4pm. All welcome.
Deptford Town Hall is a Grade II listed building and former seat of the Mayor of Deptford. The Town Hall’s lavish, nautically themed Baroque features celebrate Deptford’s problematic history as ‘the cradle’ of the British Navy.
Architect: Lanchester, Stewart and Rickards 1905.
