Event overview
Impossible Photographs - From Rossellini to Documenta 13
Domietta Torlasco's lecture traces a counter-history of image warfare, from Rossellini's War Trilogy to multimedia installations such as What Dust Will Rise? by Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz and Fired but Unexploded by Hungarian artist Zsolt Asztalos.
Her purpose is to show how a critical practice of the image can shed light on war-related events while refusing to treat the visible world as if it were a target.
Domietta Torlasco is Associate Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature at Northwestern (US). She works at the intersection of film theory and practice, with a specific interest in European cinema, time-based visual arts and critical theory.
