Event overview
PhD student Elfyn Jones gives this evening's free lecture.
Sound design has begun to find its way into operatic practice. Recorded sound has been used as soundscape or sound effects. Electronics, electroacoustic music, or processed sound have been used in different ways as instrumental timbres in the ensemble of opera and music theatre pieces. Sound has also been used in audio-visual presentation alongside live music and staging, and in site-specific work to amplify and modify the sounds of performance.
In this project I am seeking to find methodologies for the integration of sound design practice into the compositional process of opera, using as the point of departure a consideration of the sound world of the characters themselves, and working from this towards completed operatic compositions. The aim is to develop a practice of opera composition that uses sound design in a dynamic way within and around the musical fabric of the work, establishing connections, contrasts and complementarities between these elements, and thereby enhancing the expressive potential of the medium.

The Music Research Series is designed to help postgraduate students advance their research and careers. The events stimulate exchange, hones skills, facilitates the creation of professional networks and helps to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community, all over a glass of wine! Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music but of course undergraduates, music researchers, and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
