Sounds of February, Smells of October: A Sensory History of the Russian Revolution
Goldsmiths welcomes Professor Jan Plamper to give his Inaugural Lecture, the final of the 2016/17 series.
The end of 300 years of Romanov rule became known to the city-dwellers of Petrograd not through newspaper headlines, and not even through rumours passed by word of mouth, but through the sounds, sights, and smells of discharging rifles, and later through the crack of bursting street lamps and shattered shop windows. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Jan Plamper asks what a sensory history perspective might add to our understanding of this watershed event.
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception
