Event overview
Colleagues from Goldsmiths Professor Lisa Blackman and Vicki Baars will talk about their work and research relating to sexual harassment in Higher Education.
Schedule for the event:
- Introduction from Professor Elisabeth Hill, Co-Chair of Goldsmiths Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team.
- Professor Lisa Blackman - “Cultures of Consent: Sexist Curriculum/Sexualised Academic Cultures?”
Sexualised academic cultures, sexist curriculum and practices of sexual abuse, harassment and misconduct are now firmly on the agenda within universities following high profile cases of sexual misconduct between students and staff and students. This talk will explore whether, or the extent to which, sexist curriculum correlate with sexualised academic cultures. Making links to a British Academic study, ‘Cultures of Consent: Examining the complexity of sexual misconduct and power within universities’, being carried out by Professor Lisa Blackman, Dr Yasmin Gunaratnum and Dr Tiffany Page at Goldsmiths, within the Centre for Feminist Research, Lisa will explore some of the issues shaping “cultures of consent” that require further research and investigation. The talk will make links to the Student Union’s “Liberate My Degree” initiative, which is now part of Goldsmiths LTAS. Lisa will give some examples of why this is important if we are to ensure we create inclusive and open learning and teaching environments that do not perpetuate wider dynamics of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and so forth.
- Vicki Baars - “Why is higher education investing more time and money into responding to and preventing sexual harassment, violence and misconduct?”
Vicki will discuss the research and events that have led to the UK Higher Education sector prioritising issues around sexual harassment, violence and misconduct. She’ll take us through the different influences and drivers to the development of this work and touch on what is happening here at Goldsmiths.
There will be time for Q&A.
