Event overview
How do young people in southeast London articulate belonging to Britain?
Dr Sadia Habib returns to Goldsmiths to headline the first of CISJs Autumn Seminar Series. She will present her empirical findings and analysis about how students in southeast London perceive Britishness and belonging. Young people are deeply concerned about social divisions and inequalities impacting upon their sense of belonging to southeast London. Student identity is found to be inextricably bound up with their intersectional experiences of multiple categories such as social class and race.
Students are keen to explore the complexities of race and social class; therefore it is important students critically engage in open discussions about identities and racisms, as they negotiate ways of belonging to Britain.
When discussing national identity, home and belonging, youth often affirm local place attachments and a local sense of citizenship. Students’ sense of national identity is dwarfed by their sense of local identity, and transnational postcolonial identities impact upon ways of belonging to Britain.
