The Constance Howard Centre for Textiles at Goldsmiths University of London presents an exhibition of On the Melancholy of Tailors: an essay by Charles Lamb, embroidered and animated by Susie Vickery.

The work is based on study of tailoring practices in various countries, tailors from India, Nepal and Tibet were interviewed and Susie illustrated the interviews in a graphic book using embroidery and fabric collage. During her research Susie came across an essay ‘On the Melancholy of Tailors’ by Charles Lamb. Written in the early 19th century, it is a satirical essay attributing the melancholy of tailors to the fact that they sit cross-legged and eat too much cabbage. Susie illustrated the essay in the form of a long panel, referencing the Bayeux tapestry, and as an animated film.

Susie worked for many years as a theatrical tailor until she moved to Nepal and studied embroidery leading to a degree in embroidered textiles, which she completed in 2009. Her background gave her the inspiration for this work.

Susie’s work won the 2009 Christine Risley Award, which is an award of £500 plus two exhibitions. The award is given by the Constance Howard Centre in memory of Christine Risley. Christine was a key member of Constance Howard's remarkable department of textiles from its beginning in 1948. She retired in 1990 and died in 2003. Susie was selected for the award at the Graduate Showcase at the 2009 Knitting and Stitching Show, it is the first time that the award has been offered outside of Goldsmiths and in partnership with Creative Exhibitions Ltd.
