Two Universities Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL) Networks: Widening Participation and Social Inclusion (WPSIN) and Women in Lifelong Learning (WiLL) are pleased to jointly present a seminar exploring the issues facing adult women returning to education.

Professor Jocey Quinn will open the session with a presentation based on her recent work with adult learners which problematises the concept of the ‘learning community’ and explores the significance of ‘imagined social capital’ in their lives.

Heather Allison will then report on her recent research which highlights the dilemmas of single parents returning to higher education and questions how universities engage with ‘non-traditional’ students.

Black and Minority Ethnic women social work students confront some very specific challenges in entering the profession and Joan Fletcher will outline these and share some strategies for building a more welcoming HEI culture and more inclusive approaches to teaching and learning.

In the second part of the session, participants will be invited to consider practical strategies for supporting learners and make suggestions for policy change at local and national level.
