Weekly lecturers exploring the practices of innovation in management, journalism, sociology, and social media
The innovation lecture series encourages student exposure to and interaction with the interdisciplinary theory, culture, economics, and emerging technologies of the theory and practices of innovation in management, journalism, sociology, and social media.
Topics ranging from digital media, big data, community curation, engaging audiences, investigative techniques, design, and entrepreneurial activities provide the foundation for practice-based research in the programme. Each case study features an industry guest speaker at the executive level discussing challenges related to a real-world implementation of the particular case study topic.

30 October: Business Models and Competition
Guest: Edward Roussel, Executive Editor, Telegraph Group
Edward is responsible for delivering the overall content strategy for the Telegraph group, its tablet and mobile offshoots. He was formerly bureau chief in London, Paris, and Brussels and later global Managing Editor for Bloomberg News.

13 November: 'Hypotheticals in the Creative Industries'
Guest: Pat Loughrey, Warden, Goldsmiths
Pat is the current Warden of Goldsmiths responsible for overall leadership of the institution. Previously he was Director of BBC Nations and Regions where, since 2000, he held overall responsibility for the BBC's television, radio, and online programmes and services in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the 12 English regions. He led more than 6,500 staff based in more than 50 centres across the UK.
20 November: 'Innovating through Hard Work, Determination, and Serendipity'
Guest: Nicola Horlick, CEO, Derby Street Films, Bramdean Asset Management
Nicola has been a leading fund manager in the City of London for over twenty-eight years. During that time, she has set up and managed a number of investment businesses. Nicola was educated at Balliol College, Oxford and began her career in the City in 1983 when she joined SG Warburg, which was then one of the leading merchant banks. Her latest ventures include Derby Street Films, aimed at providing financing and development funds for independent films, and her new restaurant Georgina?s.
27 November: 'The Future of Technology'

Ben is currently the UK Prime Minister?s Ambassador to TechCity, London?s Internet Sector; Innovator in Residence at the Centre for Creative and Social Technologies (CAST) at Goldsmiths, University of London; A non-resident fellow of the 21st Century Defense Initiative at the Brookings Institute in Washington D.C; Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Defence Studies, London; A member of the European Commission High Level Group on Media Freedom; A fellow of the European Policy Centre in Brussels, and Editor-at-Large of the UK edition of WIRED magazine. His latest book, my fifth, “64 Things You Need to Know Now For Then” is published internationally.
4 December: 'Connecting the World through Grassroots Innovation'
Guest: Ken Banks, FrontlineSMS
Ken Banks, founder of kiwanja.net, devotes himself to the application of mobile technology for positive social and environmental change in the developing world, and has spent the last two decades working on projects in Africa. His early research resulted in the development of FrontlineSMS, an award-winning text messaging field communication system aimed at grassroots non-profit organisations.
11 December: 'Creating Brands & Engaging Audiences'
Guest: Sarah Wood, Founder & COO, UnrulyMedia
Sarah Wood is an inspirational female entrepreneur who, with her two co-founders, has built one of the foremost global players in online video advertising. In just five years, Wood has grown the organisation from a three-person, zero-turnover operation to the world?s leading social video platform – occupying a 40% market share. Unruly?s sales have tripled in the last year alone, and are set to achieve the same feat in 2012, with a forecast turnover of £17.8m.
Furthermore, staff numbers have grown by 400% in the last three years. Sarah is the creative force behind UnrulyMedia and responsible for the development and execution of their award winning social video campaigns.
