Revisiting Comparative Research: Examples from 'The Orchestra in Global Perspective' Project

This afternoon symposium features the work of MA Ethnomusicology students with a keynote presentation by Professor Tina K. Ramnarine, Royal Holloway, University of London: "Revisiting Comparative Research: Examples from 'The Orchestra in Global Perspective' Project"

This keynote presentation will consider the contemporary relevance of interests in comparison within Ethnomusicology. Drawing on two case-studies (one from the Caribbean the other from India), the presentation will offer perspectives on the ways in which orchestral performance traditions are shaped and historically connected. By considering cultural exchanges in orchestral contexts, this paper will suggest that ethnographic-based comparative methods offer a way of researching into global histories.

Tina K. Ramnarine is Professor of Music at Royal Holloway University of London. Her interdisciplinary research and fieldwork in Nordic and Caribbean contexts has led to several publications including Creating Their Own Space: The Development of an Indian-Caribbean Musical Tradition (2001),Ilmatar's Inspirations: Nationalism, Globalization, and the Changing Soundscapes of Finnish Folk Music (2003), Beautiful Cosmos: Performance and Belonging in the Caribbean Diaspora (2007), and an edited volume Musical Performance in the Diaspora (2007). Her current research is on ‘orchestras’ in global perspective. She is the UK Representative for ICTM and an Executive Board member of SEM (USA). She is a former Chair of the BFE and co-editor of the journal Ethnomusicology Forum.

All welcome
