The Centre for Language Culture and Learning presents a seminar by Thomas Zacharias on the ways in which cultural diversity is conceptualised and articulated through political discourses of ‘multiculturalism’ in contemporary Germany.
The lecture will show how these discourses – which are linked in complex ways to Germany’s fascist past - actively produce difference and facilitate the marginalisation and racialisation of Germany’s minorities. The final section of the talk will point to the inventive ways in which these dominant representations are countered by a new wave of multi-ethnic grassroots activist groups.
Thomas Zacharias completed his doctoral research on racism in German political discourse in the Department of Sociology at Goldsmiths. He is a lecturer on the BA Social and Cultural Studies in the Educational Studies Department and also teaches on the MA Culture Ethnicity Diaspora Programme at Birkbeck College, University of London.
