Sander Gilman is a social, cultural and literary historian, specialising amongst many areas in the history of science, psychoanalysis and Jewish Studies. He is the author or editor of over eighty books on a wide range of topics, including: the history of psychiatry, visual stereotyping, Jewish Culture, dieting, cosmetic surgery, race and genetics. Some of his books include: The Jew’s Body (1992), Making the Body Beautiful (1999), Seeing the Insane (1982, 1996), Jewish Self-Hatred (1986), The Fortunes of Humanities: Teaching the Humanities in the New Millenium (2000) and Obesity: The Biography (2010).
Sander Gilman has been a visiting professor in numerous universities around the globe. He is a distinguished Professor of the Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as Professor of Psychiatry at Emory University, where he is the director of the Program in Psychoanalysis and of the Health Sciences Humanities Initiative. He is also a Professor at the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities.
Yulia Egorova studied history, Jewish Studies and Religion in Moscow University, Oxford and SOAS (London). She has conducted research on the social implications of genetic research among Jewish populations. Her current research interests include anthropology of Jewish communities, the social aspects of population genetics and Jewish-Muslim relations.
She is the author of Jews and India: Perceptions and Image, and a co-author of Genetics, Mass Media and Identity: a case study of the genetic research on the Lemba and the Bene Israel. Her new book The Jews of Andhra Pradesh: Contesting Caste and Religion in South India, co-authored with Shahid Perwez, is coming out this month with OUP.
Yulia Egorova is a Senior Lecturer in Anthropology and in Health and Human Sciences at Durham University.
The Exploring the Body: Interdisciplinarity in Practice series focuses on exploring the body through diverse approaches, bringing together scientists, artists, historians, philosophers, social scientists and others to explore how their different disciplines and practices dealing with the body can not only illuminate each other, but also inform each other.
