The Centre for Language, Culture and Learning presents a seminar by Thomas Zacahrias: Multicultural Racism and Melancholia: The Production of Difference in Contemporary German Political Discourse

The seminar will focus on the ways in which cultural diversity is conceptualised and articulated through political discourses of ‘multiculturalism’ in contemporary
Germany. It will show how these discourses – which are linked in complex ways to Germany’s fascist past - actively produce difference and facilitate the
marginalisation and racialisation of Germany’s minorities. The final section of the talk will point to the inventive ways in which these dominant representations
are countered by a new wave of multi-ethnic grassroots activist groups
