Event overview
THIS IS WAR
This year’s degree show title is aggressive, it demands attention and it risks offending. It’s brave, bold and highlights how serious we take what we do. But, who are we at war with? What are we fighting for or against? Every student defines this, to some extent, through the territory they map and the battles they fight.
Seeing design beyond its disciplinary boundaries, but also beyond the traditional definitions of it as a 'problem solving activity' is starting to open up new opportunities for design.
These opportunities offer new challenges to our discipline and the education of our students. The craft and manufacturing skills of the last century have little to do with the knowledge economy of this century. The social, environmental and political problems of today will not be solved by the tools and approaches educators have been teaching designers over the last 100 year.
It is here in the complex context of the 21st Century that we find the real war. Our war needs courage and integrity, it demands that we take a stand, that we produce work that tries to impact our world and material culture. It is a war that matters.
