You are invited to an exciting day of events to celebrate the life and work of Richard Hoggart, one of Britain’s foremost post-war public intellectuals and former Warden of Goldsmiths from 1976 to 1984.

Film Screening: The Chatterley Affair
Ian Gulland Lecture Theatre, Whitehead Building
David Tennant plays Richard Hoggart during the famous 1960 Lady Chatterley’s Lover obscenity trial (BBC, 2006). Includes a welcome message from Professor Alan Downie.
4pm – 5.30pm
Panel Event: ‘Uses of Literacy Today’
Ian Gulland Lecture Theatre, Whitehead Building
Discussion exploring the diverse contemporary significance of Richard Hoggart’s ‘Uses of Literacy’. Panellists include Professor Laurie Taylor, Professor Les Back and Dr Michael Bailey.
5.45pm – 8pm
Reception: ‘Memories of Richard Hoggart’
Great Hall, Richard Hoggart Building
Remembering Richard Hoggart the man, with reflections, music and refreshments. Speakers include Peter Hennessy, David Lodge and Melvyn Bragg.

Archive Exhibition
Great Hall, Richard Hoggart Building
We will be showcasing the life and work of Richard Hoggart, together with the history of the Richard Hoggart Building, with a never before seen archives exhibition. Special thanks to the archive departments at the University of Sheffield and the University of Bristol, as well as the archives here at Goldsmiths.
