Event overview
CAL: Art in Contested Spaces (ii) The second in a series of three seminars curated by John Johnston and Esther Sayers
Aser El Saqqa is the founder and director of Arts Canteen a London based arts organisation that aims to explore artistic relationships between the Middle East, Mediterranean regions and diverse audiences across Europe. Arts Canteen provides platforms for emerging and mid-career artists from the middle east region who create contemporary visual art and music. One of its primary aims is to share ideas and open new conversations through events, exhibitions and their web based activities.
In a recent exhibition ‘Traces and Revelations’ El Saqqa provoked a debate as to the nature of the relationship between an artist’s work and their life-journey and lived experience. Aser explored this concept by juxtaposing the work of two contemporary artists, Mohammed Joha and Hazem Harb. Both artists are originally from Gaza, Palestine but have been working and living in Italy and Dubai respectively for the past three years.
In this presentation Aser will explore the value of arts programming in the midst of conflict and raise a number of important questions about the maintenance and development of culture in contested spaces such as Palestine and the Middle East.
