Event overview
The Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship invites you for an ICCE Open Lecture with Dr. Dean Vuletic, Marie Curie Fellow, University of Vienna
Established in 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest is the world’s largest popular music event and one of the most popular television programmes in Europe. It is organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union, whose members include national television broadcasters from almost every European state. As it is based on national entries, Eurovision provides case studies of how states promote themselves to a pan-European audience, while its voting results are also used as a measure of how different national publics perceive each other. This lecture will address why states ranging from liberal democracies to right-wing dictatorships have used Eurovision in their cultural diplomacy since the late 1950s, and what the selection of Eurovision entries tells us about the relationship between cultural diplomacy and democracy in Europe.
