Event overview
We are delighted to invite you to a Special Screening hosted by the History Department of Wisdom of Changes: Richard Wilhelm and the I Ching. The screening will take place in the presence of the director of the film, Bettina Wilhelm and will be followed by a Q & A with the director.
When and where: Wednesday, April 22 at 17:30, at the RHB Small Cinema.
“Wisdom of Changes” is a documentary about the life and work of Richard Wilhelm, mostly known in the West for his translation of the I-Ching (Yijing, Book of Changes). Richard Wilhelm came to China as a young missionary in 1899. He did not baptize a single Chinese, but instead translated some of China’s most famous texts.
The film presents an account of one of the most fascinating figures who brought Chinese culture to the West as well as of fin du siècle China. Richard Wilhelm and the I-Ching have had a profound influence of C.G. Jung, on 1960s counterculture, as well as a plethora of artists in the 20th century, from Jorge Luis Borges to John Cage.
