Event overview
Professor Faiza Bensemmane will discuss the issue of novice teachers of English in the University of Algiers who had never been through a teacher education programme.
Danielewicz(2001:12) writes that “Forming a teaching identity is a complex and culturally-based process”. Professor Bensemmane examines the dynamic interplay between “Sarah”, a developing teacher, her identity, agency and the context in which she lives and works to see how these factors affect her ability to achieve her teaching purposes. She will explore how Sarah forms professional identity, basing her behaviour and teaching practices on the ‘biographical baggage’(Collinson 2004), values, beliefs, skills, knowledge and images she brings with her as she enters the profession, for instance the reminiscence of her English learning, first as school pupil , then as undergraduate and graduate student.
Faiza Bensemmane is Professor of Linguistics and Didactics in the English Department, faculty of letters and languages, University of Algiers. She is a Visiting Research Fellow in the Centre for Language, Culture and Learning in the Educational Studies Department.
