Nicola Hogan - Campus sustainability (11:00 - 11:40)
Nicola Hogan is the Space, Environmental and Sustainability Officer here at Goldsmiths. Her background is in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment but her area of expertise is in university and college campus sustainability. Having previously conducted research at the University of Limerick where she examined its A4 paper use - and then reduced it by 32% - she then went on to work as a Green ICT project manager with the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges (The EAUC). Nicola’s remit at Goldsmiths also includes Space Management. Space Management involves the management of the dozens of research buildings, sports halls, laboratories, workshops, and studios typically found in an institution’s portfolio of Estates. Nicola has gained a significant amount of experience in how a university and college campus should operate to be both financially and environmentally sustainable. Nicola is also completing her professional Doctorate at Anglia Ruskin University. Her doctorate examines the barriers at universities and colleges when participating in sustainable ICT projects. While the research focuses on barriers when implementing sustainable ICT projects, the outcomes can be applied to any aspect of sustainability in a large institution.
Chris Peabody – 20 years retouching images (11:45 – 12:30)
Christopher is an experienced advertising retoucher represented by Happy Finish. He has been working in the industry for around 20 years and has seen it evolve from advertising photography with 5x4 film backs, to early versions of Photoshop and now to the full CGI. Christopher will talk about his own route into the industry and how as a freelancer he is always trying to stay at the top of his game. He will talk to the attendees about their own strategies to reach their goals: Getting a break, getting in and getting on, making your own luck, knowing yourself, enhancing your creative palette. In synopsis: It’s hard, but it’s worth it.
