GEB, the Brazilian Migration to the UK Research Group, was founded by Ana Souza (Goldsmiths, University of London), Denise Garcia (University of East London) and Tamara Oliven (University College London) on 28th April 2008 .
The idea of having such a group resulted from discussions around Ana Souza’s thesis and Denise Garcia’s dissertation carried out on ABEP ’s discussion list. The discussions recognised that there are important cultural and academic activities about Brazil in the United Kingdom but identified a gap in relation to studies on Brazilians living in the United Kingdom. The relevance of such studies was acknowledged, and GEB was formed with the following objectives:
- Allow a multi-disciplinary understanding of the issues affecting the Brazilian community in the UK
- Create a resource bank with publications about the Brazilian immigration in the UK and in other countries
- Promote discussions between representatives of the Brazilian community and researchers in order to allow for a better understanding of how members of this community experience immigration
- Disseminate research on the Brazilian community in the UK through seminars, workshops, publications and online
- anthropology
- business
- cultural studies
- geography
- linguistics
- sociology
GEB organizes discussions through its monthly seminars as well as round tables through its annual seminar. GEB is also instrumental in encouraging its members to participate in local, national and international conferences as well as to publish their research in refereed journals.
GEB participates in discussions with the Brazilian authorities in the UK and in Brazil through participation in “RedeUK”, the network of Brazilians in the UK; in “Rede de Brasileiros e Brasileiras na Europa”, the network of Brazilians in Europe; as well as in the conference “Brasileiros no Mundo”, the network of Brazilians in the world.
