New report from One World Trust/Centre for Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement, Goldsmiths

This timely report, ‘Empowering citizens: Realising service user involvement in UK Third Sector organisations through accountability principles in self-regulation initiatives’ written by Jeannet Lingan and Michael Hammer, builds upon the One World Trust’s extensive expertise in Third Sector accountability in the context of international development.  Having reviewed the lessons from a diversity of countries, the researchers move on to examine a range of self-regulation initiatives in UK, identifying ways in which they can encourage the participation of users, thereby strengthening the accountability of civil society organisations more generally.

New report from Praxis/Centre for Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement, Goldsmiths

Juan Camilo Cock's report on 'Evaluating the Impact of Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations on Community Cohesion'  provides an overview of differing approaches, experiences and guidance. Having set out their limitations as well as their strengths, the report goes on to propose ways of building upon these, to develop effective evaluation strategies for Third Sector organisations that are concerned with building social solidarity, such as Praxis, the partner organisation for this research.

New report from TUC/Centre for Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement, Goldsmiths

Professor Marjorie Mayo says about author Chris Wright's report: "Swords of Justice and Civic Pillars; the case for greater community engagement by British trade unions' explains the concept of union-community engagement, linking strategies for active trade unionism with strategies for active citizenship. Through five case studies, the report goes on to demonstrate ways in which trade unions and communities can develop networks to support vulnerable workers, encourage activism, improve access to employment and training and strengthen community cohesion. This report is very timely in the context of debates on the Big Society together with debates on impacts of the Comprehensive Public Spending Review".

Launch of Goldsmiths’ Partnership to support research capacity building in the Third Sector: working with Lincoln and Manchester Metropolitan Universities to develop research for Active Citizenship and Community Empowerment

As part of The Economic and Social Research Council’s programme to promote research capacity in the Third Sector the Council is awarding resources to Goldsmiths, in partnership with Lincoln and Manchester Metropolitan Universities. This is to develop a new capacity building Cluster for Third Sector research. The Cluster will receive funds of one million pounds over five years to develop research in relation to active learning for active citizenship and community empowerment. There will be collaboration with the new Third Sector Research Centre, based at the University of Birmingham, simultaneously created by The ESRC in partnership with The Office of the Third Sector and The Barrow Cadbury Trust.

Through the new Cluster, there will be three ESRC PhD research studentships and a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, together with opportunities for placements and bespoke research with Third Sector Organisations.  Enquiries are welcomed.

The Launch

Starting as we mean to continue, we launched the Centre with a debate exploring perspectives on futures for Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement. Lifelong Learning has typically been defined in relatively narrow terms, focussing upon improving the individual’s employability and continuing professional development. Although important, employability is far from representing the only goal for lifelong learning, however. How can the Centre contribute to redressing this imbalance, promoting lifelong learning for community engagement, equalities and active citizenship agendas for social justice?

Veronica McGivney, who has published extensively with the National Institute for Adult Continuing Education, opened the discussion, together with:

Steve Bullock - Mayor of Lewisham,
Megan Dobney - South East Region Trades Union Congress
Jenny Harris - National Theatre
Vijay Krishnarayan - Commonwealth Foundation
Charles Woodd - from the Department for Communities and Local Government

The Centre is based in Deptford Town Hall, Department of Professional and Community Education (PACE), Goldsmiths, University of London, New Cross London SE14 6NW

Testimonies of Cuts and Resistance Meeting

On 14th June 2011 PACE hosted a workshop for people and organizations that provide placements for the professional, community and youth and cross sectoral arts trainings in PACE. Our report of the meeting describes how participants were invited to bring information, stories, photographs or other images and to share their experiences of how the cuts were affecting their work. Our aim was to provide a space for collaboration between PACE and our placement providers and to imagine how we might work collectively to create joint research projects, provide placement and teaching opportunities and to continue to resist the cuts.
