National Third Sector Research Capacity Building Programme

In 2008 as part of the National Third Sector Research Capacity Building Programme, the Centre for Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement was awarded:
Three CASE studentships for PhDs working in partnership with third sector agencies, one Knowledge Transfer Partnership, two placements, and five vouchers, each of which enables the Centre to work in partnership with a Third Sector organisation, to develop research on a topic of direct relevance.

Our three research students enrolled in September 2009. They are Mohamed Aden Hassan, Daniella Holland, and Gabi Recknagel.

Placement and voucher projects have been developed as follows:

With PRAXIS, a Third Sector organisation based in East London - research and evaluation strategies in relation to their work with refugees, asylum seekers, migrant workers and established communities, assessing contributions to community cohesion.

With the Trades Union Congress - researching trade union initiatives to link active trade unionists and active communities, with a particular focus upon unemployed workers initiatives.

With One World Trust - researching the lessons to be shared between international NGOs and British Third Sector organisations in relation to accountability to users and beneficiaries.

With FreeRadicals - scoping innovative approaches to involing young people as active citizens.

With two separate community arts and media projects, London Bubble Theatre in Southwark and STREAM in Greenwich - researching the impact of community arts and media, in terms of promoting active citizenship.
