2008 RAE results
Research:In RAE 2008 20% of our submission was judged world-leading and 40% internationally excellent. The panel stated that the "inter-disciplinarity of the submission is strongly commended and contributes substantially to the diversity of UK research in this area." They went on to say that our outputs "demonstrated a body of research of a quality that is internationally recognised, internationally excellent and in a significant proportion of cases, world leading." Our research environment was described as "substantially of internationally excellent quality" and noted that "the strategic focus on the creative industries that contributed in very large part to a vital, sustainable and credible submission."
This is a real vindication of the multi-disciplinary approach that is so strong at Goldsmiths and in our department. Computer Science is a discipline that need to be continually renewed and invigorated by its application in a range of spheres in art, science, heritage, culture, enabling all kinds of creative activity. It is especially pleasing that we achieved these high figures with a submission that included every full-time academic in the Department demonstrating a very solid strength in depth. We appear to be the most improved research department in the country and if we rank the Department using the weighting formula used by HEFCE, we finish above many Russell Group Universities (including such leading institutions as Kings and Warwick) and in the middle of the 1994 Group of Universities.
