The VTB Capital Prize for Young Cellists

The competition is open to cellist aged 30 and under on 27 April 2009.


Semifinals: Saturday, 25 April 2009 (10:30 am- 6:30pm)

The order of appearance will be determined by the draw at 9:30am on 25 April.

Repertoire for Semifinals
A. Concerto: Dvorak, Schumann, Elgar, Shostakovich No 1 or No 2, or Prokofiev, op 125 (complete, with piano accompaniment)
B. Britten – Solo Cello Suite No 1, 2 or 3 (complete)

  1. Accompanist, if necessary, will be provided free of charge. Applicants should clearly state the need for an accompanist in their application form.
  2. The judges may interrupt performance at any time or may ask to perform just one movement of a Concerto.
  3. The draw for Round 1 will take place on 25 April at 9.30 am in Deptford Town Hall Council Chamber (1st Floor).
  4. At this moment all selected participants should pay registration fee of GBP 30 (cash only).
  5. Practice rooms will be made available for those who will perform in Round 1. 15 minutes will be allocated for each performer in the hall, between 9:45 – 10: 45 am and between 1:30 – 2:30 pm.
  6. The contestants can play chosen works in any order.
  7. All the Concertos should be played from memory.
  8. The competitors will be responsible for making their own arrangements in respect of accommodation needs.
  9. A list of accommodation will be made available on the website. There are limited possibilities for a cheap accommodation on campus, next door to the Deptford Town Hall (appr. £30 per day).

The order of the contestants’ appearance in the Finals (Wigmore Hall) will be determined by the judges panel. The contestants can play chosen works in any order.

The Semifinals and the Finals of the Competition will be open to the public. The Competition will help to the finalists (living outside UK) to arrange their accommodation in the Goldsmiths College halls of residence.
