CSISP-related MA/MSc Programmes

MA Social Research

The MA Social Research is an ESRC programme. It is ideal research preparation for an MPhil/PhD and a future academic career in Sociology. It is also suited to those in the public, health and third/NGO sector who might have already undertaken some social research but want to advance their social research skills and training, either as part of their existing work or for their future career development. The course offers substantial training in quantitative methods and an introduction to a wide variety of contemporary theoretical traditions. It encourages ‘hands on’ application and evaluation of different methodological approaches and associated methods including ethnography, archival research, interviewing, textual analysis and as well as undertaking statistical analysis of large-scale data sets. On successful completion of the course, students are expected to have the capacity to generate and execute sociological research at an advanced level; ability to examine how social, public and civil policy can be influenced by sociological knowledge; ability to investigate, appraise and communicate empirical information. The programme is convened by CSISP Co-director Dr Marsha Rosengarten. Read more.

MA/MSc Digital Sociology

The MA/MSc Digital Sociology is a collaborative MA programme between the Department of Sociology and Computing and hosted in CAST (The Centre for Creative and Social Technologies). The programme integrates sociological thinking and research methods with practical expertise in digital technologies. It has been specifically designed to enable students to develop the sociological, methodological and technolological skills required for the analysis and elaboration of digital social life. The programme aims to enable both serious reflection on the challenges that digitization poses to sociology and society at large, as well as to enable students to engage creatively with the opportunities for empirical research and methodological invention offered by digital devices. The MA/MSc Digital Sociology includes an Internship, which enables students to spend 2-6 weeks working in a content-based institution. The programme is convened by CSISP Co-Director Noortje Marres.
