Research interests
Gay researches in the areas of theories of materiality; ethics and practices of everyday life; waste and water and their role in contemporary forms of politics; and media and publics. She is currently engaged in an Australian Research Council collaborative project, with Kane Race and Emily Potter, on the social and material life of bottled water. This project is investigating how disposable plastic packaging transforms water, drinking practices and waste relations. It involves a range of international case studies of bottles in action. The book on this research, Plastic Water, is under contract to MIT press. Other projects Gay is also working are an environmental history of plastic and the intersections and interactions between markets and publics.
