Dean Murphy is a research associate at the National Centre in HIV Social Research, University of New South Wales. He is also a health promotion and policy analyst at the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations where he works in the area of HIV biomedical prevention policy. His research is in the areas of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the development and impact of HIV prevention technologies, HIV genotyping and phylogenetic analysis, HIV-related stigma among gay men, cybersex, kinship and contract surrogacy. Dean has also worked in the development of HIV prevention policy and health promotion programs. This has included work with Marsha Rosengarten on translating research on the use of HIV clinical markers by gay men to inform sexual practices into national education campaigns on seroadaptive HIV prevention approaches such as 'strategic positioning.' Currently he is developing a demonstration study of the implementation of PrEP (HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis) in Australia, which is a collaborative project with Marsha Rosengarten and others, called HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for men who have sex with men: where does it fit in the Australian HIV prevention landscape. Dean is on the organising committee of the M2012 International Microbicides Conference.
