Research Interests
James is currently working as an AHRC Research Fellow on a project entitled ‘Between Arts and Business: Reinventions of Social Engagement’. This project assesses the implications of, on the one hand, the growth in socially engaged art practices and on the other the increase in the social engagement of business. As one of its three co-directors, James established PLATFORM, an organisation which promotes creative processes of democratic engagement to advance social and ecological justice. PLATFORM works across disciplines for social and environmental justice. It combines the transformatory power of art with the tangible goals of campaigning, the rigour of in-depth research with the vision to promote alternative futures. For the last few years, James has worked on the project ‘Unravelling the Carbon Web’ and, with Andy Rodwell and Lorne Stockman, has recently published ‘The Next Gulf: London, Washington and the Oil Crisis in Nigeria’ (2005).
