Research Interests
Concepts of health, illness, therapeutics and/or healing in the context of different forms of medical rationality; concepts of life and vitalism; the body and the organism; social theory in relation to the ‘psy’ disciplines, emotions, subjectivity/selfhood and mental health. My PhD research focused on psychosomatics as a space of problematization in the context of twentieth-century medicine, with and emphasis on its ethical and political implications as an ‘alternative’ medical imagination. Since then I have continued to investigate the grounds and practical forms of the internal critique of the role of science in medicine, using both historical and contemporary sources. I have recently spent a year in Germany as an Alexander Von Humboldt research fellow, studying vitalism and the work of Viktor Von Weizsäcker. In my next book-length project I hope to synthesise the fruits of this research with an analysis of interdisciplinarity (particularly medical humanities) in contemporary medical culture.
