Creativity Beyond Borders

Professor Hutnyk was awarded £50k for an AHRC Beyond Text Research Network Grant to bring together researchers in Indian. London, Germany, Denmark and Sweden around the theme of Creativity Beyond Borders. The network entails a series of week-long intensive research workshops, running in different cities from November 2008 to June 2010. The highlights have included the successful workshop of Förvaret/Detention theatre piece which then went on an extended run at the Göteborgs Stadsteater, Sweden, from December 11 2009 until March 2010. Another highlight was the peripatetic walks that became a key part of the workshops after the Berlin Wall anniversary (we met in the run up to the fall of the wall, so the themes of memory, border and national bifurcation/reunification were prominent). In 'Border Infection' a maritime and music theme walk in the environs of Deptford was particularly memorable (see Transpontine for more on this). Other workshops at Goldsmiths have taken up this walking methodology – eg Social Aesthetics – February 2010). An art exhibition on the theme associated with 'Border Infection' featured artists from the Network and was described as ‘the best show of the year’ by Gallery staff. Developing links with culture industry organisations that took up our theme of Beyond Text Be yond Borders – eg CPH:DOX,    Clandestino and LDN:BRU has been particularly satisfying. The fina l workshop is June 8-13 in Göteborg as part of the Clandestino Festival. See the Network blog.
