FAQs
How do I find out about local cycle routes?
- Use the LCC guides to work out quieter routes.
These are free maps with recommended cycle routes marked on them. They are available in bike shops and libraries or order from http://www.lcc.org.uk/
LCC stands for London Cycling Campaign.
- Get a copy of the Cycling in Lewisham Guide
this has several useful routes marked on it, download it at lewisham.gov.uk/transport [pdf]
- Get a catalogue from Sustrans - http://www.sustrans.org.uk/
Sustrans sell maps and guides for cyclists including maps for the The Sustrans route along the Thames which takes you down traffic calmed street
with many traffic free sections extends from London to Dover or try the Sustrans route from Lewisham to Gatwick (the Waterlink Way)
- Go on the rides with either Greenwich or Lewisham Cyclists to find out the local routes.
You can often plot relatively quieter and pleasanter routes that are still
fairly direct by selecting B roads instead of A roads. You are less likely
to be faced with large roundabouts or have three lanes of traffic to cross.
In peak hours B roads may act as ratruns and be too narrow for the volume
of traffic in which case you may prefer wider A roads.
