FAQs

I don't want to cycle I don't like fast roads.

This is a very understandable reason for not wanting to cycle. In London there are many quiet back routes. You really don't have to use main roads and if you come to a stretch you don't like you can get off and wheel the bike. Use your head and a map. There are also dedicated cycle routes with extensive traffic free sections, for instance to get to North London you could cross the river at Greenwich, and pick up the canal tow paths along Mile End Park. The Thames Cycle route avoids busy roads and stretches from Hampton Court to Dartford or try the Route 21 which starts in Deptford, eventually reaching Gatwick Airport. This route is part of the Waterlink Way.

Contact the local LCC group who can arrange for an experienced cyclist to ride with on your way to college and help you find a route that suits you. If you are not confident to handle a junction or right turn - don't worry just pull in at a safe place which will usually be a little before the junction and get off the bike walk it. This is the great advantage of the bike - flexibility!

Consider getting trained, this is a great confidence booster. Most people find a couple of hours with a professional trainer is all they need to give them the competence to handle London's traffic conditions. The art of safe cycling is to be predictable to other road users. Knowing the optimum road position and the best way to approach roundabouts and parked cars is a great help.

For more details on training look at Tower Hamlets Bike Buddy Scheme, Cycle Training or London School of Cycling Some Councils provide training free.
