Do I need special clothing or a helmet?
For short journeys you don't need special clothing but the brighter the better. Avoid clothes that can get caught up in the moving parts. Tie your shoe laces short, there is nothing more embarrassing than getting laces caught around the cranks. In Winter you will need gloves and waterproofs. Woolworths sell excellent thermal gloves at a cheap price. Breathable walking boots keep your feet dry and the hard sole provides a good contact with the pedal. The soft rubber soles of the average trainer are less good for cycling. You can get good value breathable waterproof trousers and jackets from Millets. Ordinary waterproofs start to become very uncomfortable after 3 miles. If you are cycling at night wear something bright, ideally get a reflective waistband. Avoid black.
A helmet is advisable and an absolute must if you cycle on busy roads, during peak hours or steam down steep hills. Many accidents do not involve your head but a head is hard to mend.
