FAQs

What sort of bike do I need?

You don't need an expensive bike for getting around London. Most students will find a general purpose machine such as a hybrid or an all terrain bike (ATB) suits them best. A hybrid has the same upright riding position as a mountain bike and 'V' brakes, but thinner wheels and slicker tyres. The bike performs well on tarmac but can cope with rough surfaces as well. An ATB is more like a mountain bike with a less rigid frame. A quality mountain bike has a rigid frame and hence the need for suspension which drives up costs and maintenance. The popularity of mountain bikes makes it a more likely target for thieves. If you get a mountain bike it is a good idea to have the tyres changed to slicker ones and have mudguards fitted. For those that are doing a low mileage on relatively flat routes a 'sit up and beg' bike (ie hub gears, upright riding position, old-fashioned look) is low maintenance and ideal for short city journeys but not a bike to go touring on.
