What should I look out for when buying a bike?

Ensure that you get the right frame size, for more details look at http://www.whycycle.co.uk/ Avoid very wide wheels if you are buying your bike mainly to get around. Mud guards are essential for Winter riders and racks save you always having to carry heavy stuff on your back which is unpleasant in Summer. The brakes are more effective if the brake arms are made of metal not plastic coated teflon. Ideally the wheels and cranks (these are the arms attached to the pedal) should be aluminium. Get lights, a lock, a pump and a puncture repair kit at the time of your purchase. Expect to spend at least £15 on a lock. Spend more if you are going to be leaving your bike in one place such as a station all day. Adjust the saddle height to suit you, if it is too low the ride will be quite tiring.
