FAQs

What about second hand bikes?

Buying a second hand bike is a very good way of getting a quality bike at an excellent discount, estimate that you will have to spend £40 on making it road worthy on top of the asking price. Assess the quality of the bike by looking at the cranks and testing the weight. If the cranks are aluminium and the bike is reasonably light it is likely to be good quality. (Older frames are made of steel and likely to be a little heavier than modern aluminium ones) Look for damage on the forks - don't buy a bike that has damaged forks as this gives a choppy ride. Assess how much money you will need to spend to bring the bike up to scratch by checking the condition of the tyres, asking if the bike has been serviced and asking how worn the chain is. (If the chain is worn you will need a new block and chain costing about £35, tyres are around £10)
