Preparing Artwork for Print
We also print direct from PDF artwork. This creates a quicker and more accurate workflow, and the best possible print quality - at 600 or 1200 dpi (the end quality ultimately depends on the quality of the images used in the file itself however). Please place your PDF's in our public network folder -
k-drive/repro/in-box/pdf's for print -
and include your (exact) file name on your job order form. If unable to access this drive, please feel free to bring your file in to us on a USB stick, or email it (bearing in mind the College's 10mb limit on attachments size) to designandprint(@gold.ac.uk)
PDF's can be created on the MFD's we provide to Departments for staff use, using the scanning function, or you may have access to Acrobat Distiller or other PDF creation packages.
Don't impose your PDF files please. We will do this for you, to suit our equipment's settings and to minimise stock usage and costs. You will find a guide to choosing the size of your finished print job here. If your print job is a bleed design, please show this, and cut marks too.
If you supply your files using our on-line digital print ordering system they are converted to PDF’s automatically, from a wide variety of file types, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG’s, etc. We can also make PDF’s for Variable Data Printing or Digital Archiving if required. This system is scheduled to go live in July 2010.
Staff who have our on-line digital print ordering system installed on their computers can also send us other file types, such as .doc, .xls, and .ppt as well as PDF's. This system combines an electronic job ticket (order form) with an integrated and automatic PDF-conversion process. These PDF's are used for printing, and also stored so that you can order re-prints on-line in the future. They can also be supplied to other storage repositories within Goldsmiths (following the relevant copyright protocols of course). To arrange access to our on-line digital print ordering system on your office or home pc or mac please have your Departmental Administrator send an authorisation to our manager, and we will arrange access, and send you a password and user-instructions.
At the time of writing (May 2010), we are planning to make the on-line digital print ordering service accessible to students, using designated Open Access computers in the Rutherford Building, Hatcham House, the NAB and at our Help Desk, following on from the launch of a web payment system in ITS. Watch for updates on our News Pages for more details.
