My doctoral research aims to develop a deeper understanding of how we articulate and practice awkward space in the city. Awkward space is a term that I use to describe instances when the meshwork of dynamic inter-relationships between people and their environment becomes tangled-up and difficult to negotiate or manage. My investigation into awkward space is grounded through a series of three case study investigations of everyday places that include a bus stop, a housing estate and a college campus. These case studies chart my own research journey from devising an individual design inquiry, to coordinating and facilitating ‘co-design’ inquiries that engage designers, non-designers and local resident groups in situated, imaginative conversations and mapping workshops aimed at generating a connected knowledge through radically re-envisioning their everyday environment.
Alongside my doctoral research I have been employed as a design researcher on two academic research projects. My role as a researcher for the AHRC/EPSRC funded ‘Benchmarking Synergy Levels within Metadesign’ project (2005-2009) enabled me to experience working on the development of design tools and approaches for interdisciplinary teamwork, supported by non-hierarchical, participatory and ecologically benign design principles (www.metadeisgners.org). I also worked as a research partner on a one-year project (2008-2009) entitled ‘Metabolicity’ led by the textile research company Loop.pH, based at Central St. Martins and funded by the Audi Design Foundation (www.metabolicity.com). This project explored amateur cultures of food production in London and focused on the use of ‘awkward spaces’.
Through my work with the MA Design Futures programme at Goldsmiths, University of London, I have helped to foster 'spin-off' Metadesign activities in Norway, Korea and Japan. I have been invited to give talks and conduct Metadesign workshops both internationally in Oslo, Norway: Basel and Lugano, Switzerland; Yogakarta, Indonesia; Shanghai, China; Turin, Italy; and in the UK in Cardiff, Wales; Salford, UK: and in several colleges in London (e.g. London College of Communications, Central St. Martins and Regents Business College). Within the design department at Goldsmiths I work with Dr. Mathilda Tham to co-author and conduct the ‘Ethics and Sustainability’ lecture series for the 2nd year BA Design students and the ‘Ecology and Design’ seminars for the 1st year BA Design students.
