Introduction to TEFL
The purpose of the course will be to give students an introduction to teaching English as a Foreign Language. It will provide a systematic and practical introduction to the skills and techniques of English Language Teaching and an overview of current issues in second language learning and teaching.
The course will be as much as possible ‘hands on’ and the sessions will primarily take the form of ‘workshops’ rather than lectures. Sessions will include an overview of how language operates and of learning and teaching theory, however, the bulk of the sessions will be dedicated to an introduction to methodology for teaching English as a Foreign Language, including techniques for teaching the language areas of phonology, lexis and structure and techniques for teaching the four major skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Further sessions might also cover material evaluation (of ELT materials and teaching aids such as course books, audio, video, CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)), testing, correction and feedback, classroom management of groups and individuals, and lesson planning.
Courses
As part of the practical nature of the course, students will be able to observe practising teachers within the Centre and there will also be the opportunity for microteaching. It is anticipated that by the end of the course that students will have a greater understanding of the fundamentals of both the concepts and practice of contemporary English Language Teaching within a TEFL/TESOL environment. The course would run for one term with classes held once a week for two hours.
