Research interests

My first novel, The Pools (Serpent’s Tail, 2007) won a Jerwood/Arvon Young Writers’ Award. My second novel The Good Plain Cook (Serpent’s Tail, 2008) was recently serialized on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Book at Bedtime’ and was longlisted for the Spread the Word Prize. I was also awarded the Olive Cook Prize 2006 from the Society of Authors for my short story An Elephant in the Thames, and other stories have been anthologized in various publications and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. I’ve worked as a television documentary researcher, writer and assistant producer, a local television journalist, and as a book reviewer for various magazines. I am currently working on a third novel, set in 1950s Brighton.
