Ruth Bailey
Ruth is a lecturer in Primary Foreign Languages.
Ruth took up the post of lecturer in Education at Goldsmiths College, in January 2008 having worked at CILT, the National Centre for Languages for 4 ½ years. Prior to that she was Head of Spanish, G&T coordinator and Head of ML in two schools in inner London. As Head of Department in a new school she played a significant role in establishing the ML Department, putting together the syllabus and schemes of work, training new staff and working with initial teacher trainers.
At CILT her work was focussed on the Graduate Teacher Programme as a trainer and tutor, as well as in mentor support and in the management of the programme. She has also worked as part of the team at CILT who offer support and training to Specialist Language Colleges, focussing particularly on their work with newly designated SLCs, in primary outreach and in a series of digital video projects. She co-authored a CILT Pathfinder ‘Lights, Camera, Action: Digital Video in languages teaching’ and regularly wrote articles for CILT journals.
From July 2006 to December 2007she was the project manager for the Key Stage 3 ML Dissemination and Development programme, organised jointly with the Secondary National Strategy.
Her post at Goldsmiths encompasses initial teacher training for both secondary and primary ML students. She also teaches on the MA programme for Primary Languages: specialising in issues in transition from Key Stage 2 to 3 and in the use of ICT. She continues to take part in Consultation groups on current initiatives, such as the redesigned KS3 National Strategy for Languages.
She speaks Spanish, French and some German, but tries to learn new languages whenever possible!
